👨Adam's Mission
Sacred Gardener-Priest and Guardian
"The LORD God took the man and put him in the garden of Eden to work it and keep it."
— Genesis 2:15
עָבַד (ʿāvad)
"to work" / "to serve" — not merely agricultural labor, but service in sacred space. This word describes both cultivation and worship/service to God.
שָׁמַר (šāmar)
"to keep" / "to guard" — to watch over, protect, preserve. The same pairing (ʿāvad + šāmar) describes Levitical service in the sanctuary.
📖 Levitical Service (same words: ʿāvad + šāmar)
"And they shall keep guard over him and over the whole congregation before the tent of meeting, as they minister at the tabernacle."
Numbers 3:7
"And they shall keep guard over all the furnishings of the tent of meeting, and over the people of Israel as they minister at the tabernacle."
Numbers 3:8
"But after that the Levites went in to do their service in the tent of meeting in Aaron's presence. As the LORD had commanded Moses concerning the Levites, so they did to them."
Numbers 8:22
- Work and Keep the Garden of Eden — a priestly calling in sacred space
- Serve as priest-gardener in God's holy sanctuary-garden
- Guard the boundaries and holiness of the sanctuary (a role he failed when the serpent entered)
- Name the animals — an act of recognition and responsibility, exercising authority under God
- Keep the commandment — obedience and maintaining God's order
"And the LORD God commanded the man, saying, 'You may surely eat of every tree of the garden, but of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat, for in the day that you eat of it you shall surely die.'"
— Genesis 2:16-17
"Now out of the ground the LORD God had formed every beast of the field and every bird of the heavens and brought them to the man to see what he would call them. And whatever the man called every living creature, that was its name. The man gave names to all livestock and to the birds of the heavens and to every beast of the field. But for Adam there was not found a helper fit for him."
— Genesis 2:19-20
👩Eve's Mission
Equal Partner and Life-Bearer
"Then the LORD God said, 'It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him a helper fit for him.'"
— Genesis 2:18
עֵזֶר (ʿēzer)
"helper" / "ally" — NOT a subordinate assistant, but powerful support. This same word describes God Himself as Israel's helper and protector. It carries connotations of strength, deliverance, and even military alliance.
כְּנֶגְדּוֹ (kenegdô)
"fit for him" / "corresponding to him" — literally "as opposite him" or "face to face." The idea is of an equal counterpart, a suitable match, not a subordinate.
📖 Where עֵזֶר (ʿēzer) describes GOD as Helper (22 occurrences total)
"I lift up my eyes to the hills. From where does my help come? My help comes from the LORD, who made heaven and earth."
Psalm 121:1-2
"Our soul waits for the LORD; he is our help and our shield."
Psalm 33:20
"May he send you help from the sanctuary and give you support from Zion!"
Psalm 20:2
"Blessed is he whose help is the God of Jacob, whose hope is in the LORD his God."

Deuteronomy 33:26
"Happy are you, O Israel! Who is like you, a people saved by the LORD, the shield of your help, and the sword of your triumph!"
Deuteronomy 33:29
"So the LORD God caused a deep sleep to fall upon the man, and while he slept took one of his ribs and closed up its place with flesh. And the rib that the LORD God had taken from the man he made into a woman and brought her to the man. Then the man said, 'This at last is bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh; she shall be called Woman, because she was taken out of Man.'"
— Genesis 2:21-23
חַוָּה (Ḥavváh — Eve)
From the root חיה (ḥyh, "to live") — "mother of all living," the life-bearer.
"The man called his wife's name Eve, because she was the mother of all living."
— Genesis 3:20
- Equal Partner-Ally — corresponding to Adam, face to face as an equal
- Powerful Support — the same kind of help God provides to His people
- Life-Bearer — carrier of the gift of motherhood and life itself
- Collaborative Mission — not subordinate but complementary
- "Bone of my bones" — emphasizes kinship and equal worth
👫Joint Mission
Royal-Priestly Couple — God's Vice-Regents on Earth
"Then God said, 'Let us make man in our image, after our likeness. And let them have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over the livestock and over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.' So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them. And God blessed them. And God said to them, 'Be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth and subdue it, and have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over every living thing that moves on the earth.'"
— Genesis 1:26-28
צֶלֶם / דְּמוּת (tzelem / demút)
"image" / "likeness" — BOTH male and female equally bear God's image and represent the Creator-King in the world. They are His royal representatives.
פָּרָה וּרְבוּ וּמִלְאוּ (perú / urvú / umilʾú)
"be fruitful" / "multiply" / "fill" — plural imperatives addressed to BOTH. This is about expanding human presence and culture throughout the earth, not just biological reproduction.
כָּבַשׁ (kāvaš)
"subdue" — to bring under cultivation, to develop and order. Not exploitation, but bringing creation to flourishing order.
📖 Examples of כָּבַשׁ (kāvaš) — "subduing the land"
"Then the whole congregation of the people of Israel assembled at Shiloh and set up the tent of meeting there. The land lay subdued before them."
Joshua 18:1
"When the land is subdued before the LORD, then afterward you shall return and be free of obligation to the LORD and to Israel."
Numbers 32:22
רָדָה (rādāh)
"have dominion" / "rule" — to govern, to manage. Torah forbids exercising radah with harshness. The ideal is shepherd-king rule: just, caring stewardship.
📖 רָדָה (rādāh) must NOT be with harshness
"You shall not rule over him ruthlessly but shall fear your God."
Leviticus 25:43
"But over your brothers the people of Israel you shall not rule, one over another ruthlessly."
Leviticus 25:46
"You shall not rule over him ruthlessly but shall fear your God."
Leviticus 25:53
📖 The ideal of just rule (shepherd-king)
"May he have dominion from sea to sea, and from the River to the ends of the earth!"
Psalm 72:8
- Image-bearers of God — man and woman TOGETHER reflect the divine image
- Be fruitful and multiply — fill the earth with people and culture
- Subdue the earth — develop and order creation for flourishing
- Exercise dominion justly — rule creation carefully as God would
- Spread the sanctuary-garden's order to the ends of the earth
- Steward-priests — cultivate and guard all creation as sacred trust
"Therefore a man shall leave his father and his mother and hold fast to his wife, and they shall become one flesh. And the man and his wife were both naked and were not ashamed."
— Genesis 2:24-25
✨ The Essence of Their Joint Calling
Adam and Eve are called as a royal-priestly couple to multiply, fill the world with people and culture, develop the earth, and govern creation carefully and justly, reflecting the character of God the King. Their mission is to spread the holiness and order of the Garden of Eden throughout all the earth — to make the whole world into God's temple-garden.
📖 Theological Connections: From Eden to Eternity
Israel's Calling as a Kingdom of Priests:
"Now therefore, if you will indeed obey my voice and keep my covenant, you shall be my treasured possession among all peoples, for all the earth is mine; and you shall be to me a kingdom of priests and a holy nation."
— Exodus 19:5-6
The Church as Royal Priesthood:
"But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for his own possession, that you may proclaim the excellencies of him who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light."
— 1 Peter 2:9
The New Creation — Ultimate Fulfillment:
"And I saw no temple in the city, for its temple is the Lord God the Almighty and the Lamb."
— Revelation 21:22
"Night will be no more. They will need no light of lamp or sun, for the Lord God will be their light, and they will reign forever and ever."
— Revelation 22:5
Summary: The royal-priestly calling given to Adam and Eve anticipates Israel's identity as "a kingdom of priests," the Church's calling as "a royal priesthood," and ultimately the New Creation where God's people will "reign forever" in a world that is entirely God's temple.
